What Is Screen Resolution?

The fundamentals of display resolution β€” what it means, how it's measured, and why it matters.

Resolution = Width Γ— Height in Pixels

Screen resolution is the number of individual pixels a display can show, expressed as width Γ— height. A 1920Γ—1080 screen renders 1,920 columns and 1,080 rows of pixels β€” 2,073,600 pixels in total. Higher resolution means more pixels on the same physical area, producing sharper, more detailed images. Resolution is the single most important specification affecting display sharpness and how much content you can fit on screen simultaneously.

What Is a Pixel?

A pixel (picture element) is the smallest addressable unit of a digital display. Each pixel is composed of three subpixels β€” red, green, and blue (RGB) β€” whose individual intensities combine to produce any of the 16.7 million colors available in 24-bit color depth. On high-DPI displays such as Apple Retina, AMOLED phones, and 4K monitors, the physical pixel pitch (the gap between pixels) is so small that individual pixels are invisible at typical viewing distances.

Aspect Ratio Explained

The aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between width and height. 16:9 is the near-universal standard for modern monitors, TVs, and laptops β€” meaning for every 16 units of width there are 9 units of height. 16:10 monitors (used by MacBook Pro and some pro monitors) offer a slightly taller viewport, reducing the need to scroll. 21:9 ultrawide displays double as productivity tools, replacing the need for two monitors side by side. 4:3 was the older TV and CRT standard, now only found on legacy hardware.

Resolution vs Display Size

A larger screen does not automatically mean a sharper image. A 32-inch 1080p monitor looks blurry at close range because the same 2 million pixels are spread over a much larger area. A 15-inch 4K laptop display looks razor-sharp because the same 8 million pixels are packed into a small area. This is why pixel density (PPI) β€” not raw resolution or physical size β€” is the true measure of display sharpness.

PPI / DPI

Pixels Per Inch

PPI (pixels per inch) measures how many pixels are packed into one linear inch of screen. A 1080p 24" monitor has roughly 92 PPI β€” comfortable for desktop use but not sharp enough for close-range mobile viewing. A 6" smartphone at 1080p has approximately 367 PPI β€” far beyond the threshold at which individual pixels are visible. Apple calls their high-PPI threshold "Retina" (roughly 300+ PPI at phone distance).

DPR

Device Pixel Ratio

The Device Pixel Ratio (DPR) is the ratio of physical pixels to CSS logical pixels. A DPR of 2 (common on Retina displays and most modern smartphones) means that every 1 CSS pixel is rendered using 2Γ—2 = 4 physical pixels. This is why a MacBook Pro with a 2560Γ—1600 physical screen may report a screen resolution of 1280Γ—800 in window.screen β€” the browser works in CSS pixels, not physical pixels. The DPR bridges this gap.

Bit Depth & Color

Color depth (bit depth) determines how many distinct colors each pixel can display. The modern standard is 24-bit True Color β€” 8 bits per RGB channel β€” producing 16,777,216 possible colors per pixel. Professional displays support 10-bit color (HDR content, 1.07 billion colors) and some cinema monitors reach 12-bit. Most consumer monitors and all modern smartphones report 24-bit color depth in the browser, regardless of whether they support 10-bit internally at the hardware level.

Windows 10 / 11

Right-click the desktop β†’ Display settings β†’ scroll to Display resolution. The dropdown shows your current resolution and all supported resolutions. For per-monitor settings on multi-display setups, click the numbered display preview and adjust each independently. Alternatively: Settings β†’ System β†’ Display β†’ Scale & Layout β†’ Display resolution.

macOS

Apple menu β†’ System Settings (or System Preferences) β†’ Displays. The resolution shown is the scaled resolution (CSS/logical pixels). To see the native physical resolution, hold Option and click Scaled β€” this reveals actual pixel dimensions. On Retina Macs, the physical resolution is typically 2Γ— the reported logical resolution (e.g., 2560Γ—1600 physical on a 1280Γ—800 logical MacBook).

iPhone & iPad (iOS / iPadOS)

iOS does not directly expose the screen resolution to users in Settings. To find it: Settings β†’ General β†’ About β€” this page does not show resolution. The resolution of your specific model can be found in Apple's tech specs page. Alternatively, this online tool reads window.screen directly and shows the CSS pixel dimensions and device pixel ratio, from which physical resolution can be calculated.

Android

Settings β†’ About phone β†’ Display (varies by manufacturer). Some Android skins (Samsung One UI, MIUI) include display resolution under Settings β†’ Display β†’ Screen resolution where you can even switch between HD, FHD, and QHD modes. If your Android settings don't show resolution directly, this online screen resolution checker is the fastest way to confirm your current active resolution.

1920Γ—1080 (Full HD / 1080p) is by far the most common screen resolution globally across desktops, laptops, gaming monitors, and TVs. On mobile, 1080Γ—2400 and similar tall 1080p variants dominate Android smartphones, while iPhones vary by model. The second most common desktop resolution worldwide is 1366Γ—768, found on hundreds of millions of budget laptops still in active use.

Browsers report resolution in CSS logical pixels, not physical pixels. On high-DPI displays (Retina, AMOLED, 4K laptop screens), the operating system applies a display scale factor. For example, a MacBook Pro with a 3456Γ—2234 physical screen runs at 200% scaling β€” the browser sees 1728Γ—1117. This is intentional: it prevents text and UI elements from being microscopic. The Device Pixel Ratio (DPR) shown in this tool tells you the scale factor in use. Multiply the CSS pixels by DPR to get the physical pixel count.

Screen resolution (screen.width Γ— screen.height) is the full pixel count of your monitor in CSS pixels. Viewport size (window.innerWidth Γ— window.innerHeight) is the visible area inside your browser window β€” it shrinks when the browser chrome (address bar, bookmarks bar, dev tools) is open, and grows when in fullscreen mode. Web developers use viewport dimensions for responsive design breakpoints, not raw screen resolution.

For gaming, resolution is a tradeoff between visual fidelity and frame rate. 1080p (1920Γ—1080) is ideal for competitive gaming β€” lower GPU load allows higher frame rates (144Hz+). 1440p (2560Γ—1440) offers a strong balance of sharpness and performance for modern mid-to-high-end GPUs. 4K (3840Γ—2160) delivers stunning visuals but demands top-tier hardware (RTX 4080/4090 class) to maintain smooth frame rates. Ultrawide (21:9) resolutions add immersion for single-player games but may not be supported in all competitive titles.

Windows: Right-click the desktop β†’ Display settings β†’ Display resolution β†’ select from the dropdown. macOS: System Settings β†’ Displays β†’ Resolution β†’ select Scaled and choose the desired resolution. Note: selecting a resolution lower than native causes upscaling, which reduces sharpness. For the sharpest image, always run at the display's native resolution. On high-DPI monitors, use the OS scaling factor (125%, 150%, 200%) rather than lowering the resolution to make text larger.

4K (3840Γ—2160) refers to approximately 4,000 horizontal pixels β€” four times the pixel count of 1080p. Whether it's worth it depends on screen size and use case. On a 27"–32" monitor at typical desk distance (~60cm), 4K provides noticeably sharper text and images compared to 1080p. On a 24" monitor the difference is smaller. For video editing, photo editing, and design work, 4K is worth it for the extra screen real estate and pixel accuracy. For pure gaming, the GPU cost of rendering 4K may not be worth the visual gain over 1440p unless you have top-tier hardware.
