What Is a Blank Page Image?
A blank page image is a solid-colour raster (or vector) file sized to match a real paper format β A4, Letter, A3, and so on. Unlike a blank screen image that fills your monitor at screen resolution, a blank page image mirrors the exact inch dimensions of printable media so it slots neatly into design software, word processors, presentation decks, and print workflows without any cropping or resizing.
Use cases span print prototyping, design system mockups, app wireframes, printer calibration test prints, document background layers, and e-learning materials that need a clean white or neutral slide base.
Paper Size Reference
All dimensions below are in portrait orientation. Pixel counts are calculated at 300 DPI β the standard for professional print.
| Name | Width Γ Height (mm) | Width Γ Height (in) | Pixels @ 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| A6 | 105 Γ 148 | 4.13 Γ 5.83 | 1239 Γ 1749 |
| A5 | 148 Γ 210 | 5.83 Γ 8.27 | 1749 Γ 2481 |
| A4 | 210 Γ 297 | 8.27 Γ 11.69 | 2481 Γ 3507 |
| A3 | 297 Γ 420 | 11.69 Γ 16.54 | 3507 Γ 4962 |
| B5 | 176 Γ 250 | 6.93 Γ 9.84 | 2079 Γ 2952 |
| Letter | 216 Γ 279 | 8.50 Γ 11.00 | 2550 Γ 3300 |
| Legal | 216 Γ 356 | 8.50 Γ 14.00 | 2550 Γ 4200 |
| Tabloid | 279 Γ 432 | 11.00 Γ 17.00 | 3300 Γ 5100 |
Which DPI Should I Choose?
DPI (dots per inch) controls how many pixels are packed into each physical inch of the image. The right choice depends entirely on how you plan to use the file:
- 72 DPI β Screen: The native resolution of most monitors. Produces the smallest files and is ideal for web assets, UI mockups, and on-screen presentations where you will never print the image.
- 150 DPI β Medium: A practical midpoint for everyday office printing on a standard inkjet or laser printer. Output looks clean at normal viewing distance without the large file sizes of higher DPIs.
- 300 DPI β Print: The industry standard for professional print work β brochures, magazines, business cards, and marketing materials. Most commercial printers require 300 DPI minimum for sharp reproduction.
- 600 DPI β High: Reserved for fine-detail commercial printing such as architectural drawings, high-fidelity art reproductions, and technical diagrams. Files are very large; use SVG format if you only need a plain colour fill.
Choosing the Right Format
- PNG: Lossless compression. Every pixel is preserved exactly. Best for design workflows where the image will be edited, composited, or placed as a layer in Photoshop, Figma, or Illustrator. Supports full transparency (alpha channel).
- JPG: Lossy compression at high quality (95%). For a blank white or solid-colour page the visual difference from PNG is imperceptible, but file sizes are significantly smaller β useful when emailing or uploading to web platforms with size limits.
- WEBP: Google's modern format offering better compression than both PNG and JPG. Excellent for embedding blank page backgrounds in web pages and apps. Broadly supported in all modern browsers.
- SVG: Resolution-independent vector format. The output file is just a few hundred bytes regardless of paper size. Perfect for use in HTML, CSS, or any application that renders SVG β the image will be sharp at any zoom level on any screen.
Background Colour Guide
The tool offers five preset backgrounds chosen to cover the most common blank page scenarios:
- White (
#FFFFFF): The universal default for documents, presentations, and print. Matches the appearance of standard copy paper and is required for most business document templates. - Cream (
#FFFEF0): A warm off-white that reduces harsh contrast on screens. Popular for e-readers, long-form reading layouts, and printed books where pure white can cause eye strain under artificial light. - Light Gray (
#F3F4F6): A neutral tone used in UI design for canvas backgrounds, wireframe placeholders, and slide themes where white elements need to remain visible against the page. - Notepad Yellow (
#FEFCE8): Matches the classic legal pad tint. Useful for note-taking app mockups, educational materials, and any design that evokes a handwritten or informal aesthetic. - Black (
#000000): Ideal for dark-mode document layouts, photographer portfolio backgrounds, OLED screen tests, and cinematic presentation slides.
Common Use Cases
- Print placeholder: Drop a 300 DPI A4 PNG into InDesign or Word as a placeholder for a page that will be replaced with real content later.
- Wireframe and mockup base: Use a Letter or A4 image as the starting canvas in Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD when building a document or form layout.
- Printer calibration: Print a 300 DPI white or gray A4 to check for colour casts, banding, or nozzle issues on inkjet and laser printers.
- PDF page filler: Import a blank page image into a PDF editor to add white filler pages between sections in multi-document packages.
- Presentation background: Use a cream or light gray A4 landscape as the background for slides to achieve a softer, paper-like aesthetic compared to a stark white slide.
- Scan and digitisation overlay: Use as a registration layer in software that composites scanned handwriting or hand-drawn sketches over a clean digital page.
- Dead-pixel test: A pure white or pure black fullscreen blank helps reveal stuck or dead pixels on an LCD or OLED panel during quality inspection.
